Your Wedding Jewelry Timeline: When to Buy, When to Resize, Engrave & Insure

With the holidays approaching, it’s a common time of year for couples to consider giving the ultimate gift – the gift of marriage. Between twinkling lights, family gatherings, and that cozy end-of-year feeling, it’s no surprise that more couples get engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day than any other time of year. Maybe you’re already planning the moment. Maybe you’re just hoping someone else is.

Either way, here’s what nobody tells you: the ring is only the beginning. Between engagement rings, wedding bands, resizing, engraving, and insurance, there’s a whole jewelry to-do list that sneaks up on couples fast. And somewhere between booking a venue and arguing about the guest list, it’s easy to let it slide.

So we put together a simple timeline. Think of it as your cheat sheet from the moment you start ring shopping to the moment you say “I do.”

Your Wedding Jewelry Timeline

2–3 months before the proposal: Start shopping for engagement rings

Give yourself more time than you think you need. Holiday proposals sneak up fast, and you don’t want to panic-shop on December 20th.

Start by doing a little detective work. Does your partner wear gold, platinum, or silver? Do they love vintage style or clean and modern? Do they ever “casually” send you photos of rings? (Take the hint.) Then come in and browse. Seeing engagement rings in person is completely different from scrolling online. You’ll quickly learn what you like and what fits your budget.

Pro tip: Not sure of their ring size? Borrow a ring they already wear on that finger, or ask a trusted friend to help. We can work with that.

4–6 weeks before the proposal: Choose your diamond and setting

This is where the fun really starts. Whether you’re choosing a classic round brilliant, an oval, or even a fun heart-shaped diamond, a solitaire or halo, this is the time to make your final decision.

If you’re designing something special or resetting a family stone, build in extra time. Good craftsmanship shouldn’t be rushed. Our team is here to help you every step of the way, with no-pressure sales and expert advice to help you find the perfect ring.

1–2 weeks before the proposal: Pick it up, get an appraisal, and insure it

Your ring is ready. Before it goes away for safekeeping, take care of two things:

  1. Get an appraisal. This documents your ring’s details and value.
  2. Add it to your insurance. Ensuring your precious jewelry is covered by insurance gives you peace of mind in case the worst happens.

The good news? We offer appraisals and insurance right in our showroom. In fact, purchases made through CMI Jewelry include an appraisal, and we also offer appraisals for previously purchased items, starting at $125. We also offer the option to purchase insurance through Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group.

Right after the proposal: Resize if needed

Congratulations! Now, if the ring spins, slips, or won’t slide over the knuckle, don’t worry. That’s very common. Bring it in for resizing within the first few weeks so your fiancé can wear it comfortably and safely. A ring that’s too loose is the number one way engagement rings get lost.

4–6 months before the wedding: Shop for wedding bands

This one catches a lot of couples off guard. Wedding bands deserve the same attention as the engagement ring, especially since you’ll wear them every single day.

For the bride, you’ll want a band that sits nicely next to the engagement ring. Some settings need a curved or notched band to fit flush, so bring the engagement ring with you when you shop. For the groom, there’s more choice than ever, from classic gold and platinum to modern metals with comfort-fit designs.

Shopping together is a great way to make it a date. Grab lunch, try on rings, and take your time.

2–3 months before the wedding: Engrave your bands

Engraving is a small detail that means a lot. Popular choices include your wedding date, initials, coordinates of where you met, or a short phrase only the two of you understand. Leave enough time so you’re not stressing about it in the final weeks.

Engraving is another service we offer directly in our showroom!

1 month before the wedding: Finalize wedding day fine jewelry

Now it’s time to think about the rest of the look. Earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet can tie everything together. This is also a great time to pick out gifts for your bridal party, parents, or your soon-to-be spouse. Fine jewelry makes a meaningful keepsake long after the wedding day.

1–2 weeks before the wedding: Clean, inspect, and update your insurance

Bring your engagement ring in for a professional cleaning and inspection, so it sparkles in every photo. We’ll check the prongs and setting to make sure everything is secure. Then add your new wedding bands to your insurance policy.

After the wedding: Keep up the care

Plan on bringing your rings in for a cleaning and check-up a couple of times a year. A little maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your jewelry beautiful for decades.

Why Shopping Local Makes Every Step Easier

Here’s the thing about that timeline: almost every step involves coming back to your jeweler. You’ll resize, appraise, engrave, clean, and inspect. When you buy online or from a big chain, each of those can turn into shipping boxes, long waits, or explaining your story to someone new every time.

When you shop locally at CMI Jewelry, it’s one place, one team, and one relationship that lasts for the whole journey and beyond.

  • We’ve been here since 1970. CMI started as an importer of fine diamonds and jewelry, which means we know diamonds inside and out and can offer real value on engagement rings.
  • Experts under one roof. Our Graduate Gemologists and Master Jewelers handle everything from choosing the stone to resizing, repairs, and engraving.
  • Appraisals and insurance help. We can help you protect your engagement rings and wedding bands before they ever leave the store.
