If you love bright and lively colors, you will love August’s birthstone, the Peridot! Peridot is typically a brilliant lime green, although it can also come in brown or olive tones. Peridot is the child of volcanic action, and is often combed from the black sands in Hawaii.

In the past, peridots were favored by pirates, considered amulets against evil, and also used for medicinal purposes. It is now known for being the accepted gift for the 16th year of marriage.

Care should be taken with peridots, and they should be protected against scratches, sharp blows, household chemicals and extreme temperature changes.

At CMI Jewelry, we specialize in all types of luxury jewelry – from stunning colored gemstones to precious metals. However, we built our business on diamonds, and our 10,000 square foot showroom is packed with stunning diamond jewelry and a massive selection of engagement rings.

When you’re looking for the perfect diamond, size is definitely not all that matters. When selecting our diamonds, we always consult the 4Cs to make sure we are providing you the best quality stone. The 4Cs are: cut, color, clarity and carat.

The “cut” refers to the diamond’s proportions and finish. Some of the most popular diamond cuts include round, oval, princess, pear, and emerald, although there are many more. The color of diamonds can range from yellow to colorless – the less color, the better. The clarity is the measure of a diamond’s inclusions, which are very tiny natural marks within the diamond. You want a stone with less inclusions; a stone with no inclusions is considered flawless. The carat is the size of the diamond. Diamonds are measured in increments called points – 100 points equal 1 carat.

All of these characteristics are what contribute to the ideal diamond. At CMI we select diamonds that meet all 4Cs, not just one. Come in to meet with one of our experts to learn more and find the diamond you have been searching for.

Ruby

rubies
July’s birthstone is Ruby, which is also known as the “Lord of the Gems” for its rarity and beauty. Ruby is only available in one stunning color – a vivid, spectral red, with a very faint blue undertone. Rubies have been valued throughout history, and have been said to protect their owners from misfortune. At one time it was believed they possessed an inner flame which burned eternally. While they are a durable stone, they should still be protected from sharp blows and scratches. The finest rubies are sourced from Burma, but are also found in Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and India.

CMI is proud to be known as Raleigh’s favorite engagement and wedding ring jeweler, but did you know that we carry so much more than just bridal jewelry? We also have an incredible selection of fine jewelry that is perfect for celebrating an anniversary, graduation, holiday, or just to show someone special that you care. We have an incredible selection of colored stone, sterling silver, pearl, and diamond jewelry from luxury brands like Luvente, Fana, and Southern Gates.

Pearls

The Pearl is the official birthstone of the month of June. A pearl is a byproduct of an oyster’s defense mechanism – when a foreign irritant enters the pearl, it is immediately surrounded by layers of substance called nacre. This forms the beautiful gemstone known as the pearl.

The pearl comes in a variety of colors, although the classic white is the most popular. The larger, rounder, and the higher the luster, the more valuable. They are the accepted gemstone for the 3rd and 30th wedding anniversaries, symbolize a happy marriage, and are also a symbol of modest, chastity, and purity.

Pearls should be handled with care – never use an ultrasonic cleaner, and avoid household chemicals, cosmetics, and perfumes.

Springtime is upon us, and love is in the air! May through October is “wedding season”, and the most popular time of year for couples to make it official. While the engagement ring is important, some would argue that the most important ring is the wedding band, and we have a large selection of beautiful bands to choose from, for both the bride and groom. We have hundreds of wedding rings in stock in all different styles, from traditional to modern, and made of all types of metals, from gold and platinum, to tungsten and titanium. We carry wedding bands from top designers, including Scott Kay, S. Kashi, True Knots, Stanmark, and Crownring.

To learn more about our wedding ring selection, or come in to meet with one of our expert staff so they can help you and your future spouse choose the rings of your dreams.

Emerald

May is the heart of the Spring season, and this time of year nature is full of lush green trees and beautiful flowers. May’s birthstone reflects the beauty of this time of year – it’s the emerald! Emeralds are not just a birthstone, they are also the traditional gift for 20th and 35th anniversaries.

Emeralds are one of the most highly prized gems, and finding a flawless, clear emerald is extremely rare. They are typically small to medium sized stones, and often cut into a step or “emerald” shape. Throughout history emeralds were said to cure poor eyesight, enhance IQs, remedy infertility, and even allow the wearer to see into the future. Today, we just love the vibrant color and beauty. Emeralds should be taken care of against sharp blows, scratches, chemicals and extreme temperature changes.

When you have a stunning piece of jewelry you love and want to care for, there’s more you need to do than just clean it. Part of taking care of your new possession is having it appraised. An appraisal is an informed opinion as to the authenticity, quality, design, and value of a jewelry item. The opinion is backed by training, experience, and state-of-the-art equipment. There are different types of appraisals, one being an Insurance Replacement Appraisal, which helps you properly insure your jewelry against loss or damage. An Insurance Replacement Appraisal helps you to protect yourself in the case your jewelry goes missing.

At CMI we offer appraisals with staff members trained by the Gemological Institute of America, and unlike most jewelry stores, we offer a free appraisal with qualifying jewelry purchases.

Diamond

If you’re an April baby, you sure have a great birthstone – the diamond! One of the most popular gemstones, it’s also well known for being the stone of choice for engagement rings and 10th and 60th anniversaries. The diamond has been a traditional symbol of love since ancient Greece, and its name comes from the Greek word “adamas”, meaning “unconquerable”.

Diamonds are most popularly a colorless stone, but can also be found in a variety of colors, including green, pink, and canary yellow. They are one of the most durable gemstones, but should still be protected from sharp blows and cleaned with care.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is March’s birthstone, and is also the accepted gem for the 19th year of marriage. It’s a stunning, vibrant and bright sea blue colored gem that is part of the beryl family, along with emerald. Aquamarine is readily available in larger sizes, making it perfect for dramatic statement pieces.

In ancient times it was said to aid seafarers, making it a great gift for anyone who spends a lot of time on the water, and it’s also a universal symbol of youth, hope and health. Care should be taken to protect aquamarine from scratches and sharp blows, and it’s also recommended to have a good cleaning regularly to maintain its brilliance.
